Chicago Teachers Union Showcases Political Agenda; 200 Members Skip School for Political Workshop

The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) has come under scrutiny after approximately 200 members reportedly skipped school to attend a political workshop. The event, titled “Power At Every Level,” was held under the guise of an annual delegates’ training conference, but the CTU’s description suggests its primary goal was to expand its political reach through schools.

CTU President Davis Gates opened the event with a call to redefine transformation and renaissance in the city of Chicago. The day began with a speech by CTU organizer and Chicago mayoral candidate Brandon Johnson, who received a standing ovation from attendees.

The Institute for Education Reform is firmly against such overt political maneuvering by teachers’ unions, believing that education should be free from political agendas and focus on providing quality learning experiences for students. We advocate for teachers to prioritize their role as educators rather than political activists during school hours.

The CTU’s workshop reportedly focused on building power from school buildings to district and charter networks and the highest levels of political power in the city. Topics discussed included teaching through trauma, green schools, and assertive grievance handling.

We invite you to join us as we strive to create an education system that prioritizes student success over political agendas.

IER Dedicates Efforts to Ending the Attacks by Government Teacher Unions against Teachers, Parents and Families

Government unions should not exist. Public service should focus on serving the public good and those that enter it should be in the business of serving. Government jobs were never meant to hold the public – its families, children, and society hostage.

At Institute for Education Reform, we dedicate our efforts to once again put every child, parent, and American first in the mission of public service and not let them be forgotten. Americans should get an accountable and manageable government workforce, not one that teaches kids how to hate themselves while bankrupting our government to ensure they are never fired for bad work.

Our President, Matt Buckham, recently handled personnel for President Donald Trump where he oversaw cabinet level departments, including Department of Labor, and other independent agencies. In this role, Matt pushed to place leaders throughout government and coordinate the recapture of Executive Branch agencies that were under career and opposition control. Matt was one of the first staffers for the House Freedom Caucus, helping them navigate their first year as a group. Matt has served on Capitol Hill for over 11 years in various 501c3, government, and Executive Branch roles. He is a follower of Jesus Christ called to bring freedom to the captives.

The institute strives for the outright banning of all public sector employee collective bargaining and thus the ensuing collection of compulsory dues that warp the fabric of government by shutting out taxpayers from decision-making.
